At the end of the Baja California Peninsula, just where land ends and becomes sea, there are fascinating places, with a provincial, quiet touch, friendly and smiling inhabitants, exciting nautical adventures, an amazing tourist infrastructure and entertaining bohemian nights of lights, toasts and music to dance. Los Cabos is one of the five municipalities of the state of Baja California The head is San José del Cabo, a place that has kept its quaint provincial atmosphere. Just 32 kilometers from San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas is a tourist center with a modern infrastructure.
In Los Cabos, you must visit the following places:
San José del Cabo. A wonderful bay, a typically Mexican, quiet village. People having fun in the sea or relaxing under a shady palm tree. Daily views on the beaches along the
Sea of
Cortez , scenes that can be seen again and again in a provincial town.
Since 1928, the fishing village of San José del Cabo has been the seat of the municipal government of Los Cabos, and since 1970, when its tourist growth began, it has been on all travelers´ agenda, not only for its imposing bay – a water sports Mecca – but also for its peaceful streets and picturesque corners, full of artisans, painters, musicians, colorful fairs and festivals. San José del Cabo is located 152 kilometers from La Paz, the state capital of Baja California
San José Estuary A green corner in the middle of the desert sand, an oasis of lush vegetation, a necessary stop for over 200 species of migratory birds, this 50-hectare natural reserve is located on the mouth of the San José river, on the
Sea of
Cortez . The lush vegetation of the estuary seems like a miracle in a desert area where it only rains four or five days a year, usually in September. The flora of
San José is perfect for storing and using the rain water as much as possible. Before it flows into the
Sea of
Cortez , the
San José river is 30 miles long. When it comes to the ocean, the high tide helps the freshwater and sea water mix, which creates a nutrient rich solution that becomes sediment, which then favors an explosion of life. In the higher part of the estuary the water is fresh and there is a great variety of plants, but in the lower part, there is only the kind of flora that can tolerate its degree of salinity. The fish and other marine species spend their young or larvae phase there due to the great amount of food that allows them to develop and reach their adult size before they return to the ocean; the birds stop there as part of their migration, to take advantage of the abundant seeds and smalls fruit to satisfy their hunger and get their strength back.
From an anthropological point of view, the abundant life in the estuary attracted the Pericue Indians who were the first ones to settle in the area. Much later the Spaniards founded the
San José mission (1730). The quiet waters of the estuary make it perfect for kayaking, an excellent way to enjoy its exotic beauty very closely.
Cabo San Lucas In the seventies this fishing village became a tourist destination. A small and dream bay, an exceptional sea with crystal clear waters, with black corals and underwater sand cascades are among the reasons for this change. Located 241 kilometers from La Paz, the state capital of Baja California Sur, Cabo San Lucas boasts an arid beauty, and offers fishing, diving among corals and all water sports. A true adventure challenge with excellent services and infrastructure that will make your stay more pleasant. At Cabo San Lucas, on the tip of the
Baja California peninsula, you will find more than you expect. Divine landscapes, excellent
hotel s and restaurants, exclusive stores, a modern marina and an amazing nightlife that will keep you awake.
The Arch. The constant movement of the waves has sculpted the rock during hundreds or thousands of years, until this monumental and imposing arch was created at the tip of the Baja California peninsula, which makes it the only “finisterra” (land’s end) in the world.
Under the shade of the arch, the waters of the
Sea of
Cortez mix with those of the
Pacific ocean ; seals and marine mammals are one of the major attractions of this stone giant that has become the main symbol of Los Cabos, so much so that it appears on the municipal coat of arms. There are bottom-glass boat tours to the Arch – located in Cabo San Lucas – to admire the colored fish that live in the crystal clear waters that surround this natural monument.
Lovers´ Beach Every four years, a beautiful white-sand beach is formed close to the famous Cabo San Lucas Arch, and is visited mostly by couples of lovers who come to play with the waves, frolic on the beach or just take a stroll at sunset. This beach has a spectacular view over the
Sea of
Cortez and the
Pacific Ocean . The most romantic minds can take a glass bottom boat tour.
The Cabo Falso Lighthouse This lighthouse used to guide the boat that navigated in the area. Today, it is an abandoned skeleton that lies on the dunes that surround it. Built in 1890, it remains in spite of its apparent state of abandon, one of the major attractions in Cabo San Lucas. In spite of being located a few kilometers from downtown, one can only get to the lighthouse on horseback or in a 4 x 4 vehicles, both very easy to rent downtown.
The
Marina The tourist heart of Cabo San Lucas, it is a luxury nerve center with docking areas for more than 350 yachts and boats, countless restaurants and stores in which you can find everything you need, in addition to a mega shopping mall. The
Marina is bustling and restless, especially at sunset, when the entertainment centers open and everything is about partying. At dawn, when the tourists have a last drink, the town fishermen get ready to put out to sea, hoping to bring back sea breams, tuna, snappers and even marlins.
The Corridor A 32 kilometers (20 miles) strip that connects the peaceful city of San José del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas, it has four lanes and is one of the most important roads in
Baja California , where thousands of persons travel daily from one end to the other. The corridor runs parallel to the
Sea of
Cortez and is flanked by luxury
hotel s, golf courses and beautiful beaches, which make it one of the most exclusive areas in Los Cabos. It is ideal to go shopping or to have fun in its night clubs. Getting around on the corridor is quite easy, whether by taxi or by bus. The road is very interesting and offers beautiful views of the coastline, especially of the following beaches: Palmilla, El Chileno and Santamaria, among others.
